　　月饼通常是指人们在中秋节这个特定节日里吃的饼，通常为圆形。但现在已有各种各样的了。
　 汉族农历八月十五中秋节饮食习俗。据说起源于唐代。《洛中见闻》曾记载：中秋节新科进士曲江宴时，唐僖宗令人送月饼赏赐进士。宋代大诗人苏东坡有诗句“小饼如嚼月，中有酥与饴”赞美月饼，从中可知宋时的月饼已内有酥油和糖作馅了。到了元代，相传人们曾利用馈赠月饼的机会，在月饼中夹带字条，约定八月十五夜，同时行动，杀死赶走蒙古“鞑子”。到了明代，中秋节吃月饼的习俗更加普遍。明·沈榜《宛署杂记》载：“士庶家俱以是月造面饼相遗，大小不等，呼为月饼。”《酌中志》说：“八月，宫中赏秋海棠、玉簪花。自初一日起，即有卖月饼者，……至十五日，家家供奉月饼、瓜果。……如有剩月饼，乃整收于干燥风凉之处，至岁暮分用之，曰团圆饼也。”经过元明两代，中秋节吃月饼、馈赠月饼风俗日盛，且月饼有了“团圆”的象征义。经清代到现代，月饼在质量、品种上都有新发展。原料、调制方法、形状等的不同，使月饼更为丰富多彩，形成了京式、苏式、广式等各具特色的品种。现在，月饼不仅是别具风味的节日食品，而且成为四季常备的精美糕点，颇受人们欢迎。
　 月饼一词最早见于南宋吴自牧《梦梁录》中，那时的月饼是菱花形的，和菊花饼、梅花饼等同时存在，并且是“四时皆有，任便索唤，不误主顾”。可见这时的月饼，还不只是在中秋节吃。至于月饼这个名词的来历，已无从考证。但是北宋著名文人苏东坡留有“小饼如嚼月，中有酥和饴”的诗句，或许这是月饼这个名称的来源以及月饼做法的根据。
　　中秋节吃月饼相传始于元代。当时，中原广大人民不堪忍受元朝统治阶级的残酷统治，纷纷起义抗元。朱元璋联合各路反抗力量准备起义。但朝廷官兵搜查的十分严密，传递消息十分困难。军师刘伯温便想出一计划，命令属下把藏有“八月十五夜起义”的纸条藏入饼子里面，再派人分头传送到各地起义军中，通知他们在八月十五日晚上起义响应。到了起义的那天，各路义军一起响应，起义军如星火燎原。很快，徐达就攻下元大都，起义成功了。消息传来，朱元璋高兴得连忙传下口谕，在即将来临的中秋节，让全体将士与民同乐，并将当年起兵时以秘密传递信息的“月饼”，作为节令糕点赏赐群臣。此后，“月饼”制作越来越精细，品种更多，大者如圆盘，成为馈赠的佳品。以后中秋节吃月饼的习俗便在民间流传开来。一些地方还形成了很多特殊的中秋习俗。
　 明代起有大量关于月饼的记载，这时的月饼已是圆形，而且只在中秋节吃，是明代起民间盛行的中秋节祭月时的主要供品。《帝京景物略》曰：“八月十五祭月，其祭果饼必圆。”“家设月光位于月所出方，向月而拜，则焚月光纸，撤所供，散之家人必遍。月饼月果，戚属馈相报，饼有径二尺者。
　 月饼寓意团圆，也应该是明朝开始的。如果我们综合明朝有关月饼与中秋节民俗的资料来看，应该能够看出月饼取意团圆的历史轨迹：中秋节祭月后，全家人都围坐一起分吃月饼月果（祭月供品）。因为月圆饼也圆，又是合家分吃，所以逐渐形成了月饼代表家人团圆的寓意。
